Try Bath, NY. It is a nice little village situated in the Cohocton River Valley. Although it is the county seat for Steuben County, it is still very small. It has plenty of hotel and dining facilities as well as tourist opportunities (try Mossy Bank overlook!). It is situated in the Finger Lakes area, so also take advantage of the short hop to Keuka Lake for the wine tours and a cruise on the Keuka Maid.
Bath is located on Route 17 (also known as Interstate 86), and is only 30 minutes outside of Corning, NY, home of Corning Glassworks and Corning Museum. Visit Market Street while in Corning for outlet shopping in a small town atmosphere, and stop for an ice cream at the soda shoppe.
I hope you enjoy your trip, whichever town you pick. We love to have out-of-state visitors!

Cooperstown,NY. I grew up about a 45 minutes away and it is a beautiful area. It's a small community with a lot to offer... the lake, the beautiful hills, The Baseball Hall of Fame, The Farmers Museum is pretty neat, also it is not to far from Howes Caves which is really cool and Oneonta, NY is only 20-30 minutes away and it is a pretty nice community which also has the Soccer Hall of Fame and some other fun things to do.

Albany is the capital. Outside of Albany is Latham...a very nice suburb. Clifton Park and Saratoga are nice suburban areas as well.
