Thank you for your question.
nothing is wrong with being on welfare.
I am on welfare and a single mother of boys due to the fact that my boys and I were abused by their dad, I got us away from the abuse a year and a half ago, I got on a better track thanks to the help of the welfare system. I am still on welfare, its very hard still to make ends meet, but I am also thankful there are food banks and clothing banks around. The food stamps are just enough for a half a months of food, so then that is where I go to a food bank to fill in the gap.
It is also hard because there are some people who critisize me for being on welfare.
but for now it is the only way for to help me support my boys. I am suppose to be getting child support, but their dad is being a dead beat dad and is hiding from childsupport .
I am going to school this fall, my goal is to learn a trade in computers and get a job.
I do not want to be on welfare forever.
I wished that I did not have to depend on welfare but I do for now.
I will make it some how with God's help

I think people who harshly judge those on welfare (or benefits as we call it in the UK) should just thank their lucky stars that they have never needed to utilise the facility. I am now a qualified teacher with post graduate education but when I left an abusive husband I was 'on benefits' for a while. I had a small son and I was so glad I lived in a society that allowed someone in my position to get out of it and not be destitute. I was judged by people even before they met me and I made a stand about it several times. I know there are many people who play the system and they should be dealt with accordingly but.... there are also people out there who use the welfare system for what it is meant for... i.e. a community looking after it's members.... If only some people would look beyond their own narrow mindedness perhaps we would live in a more fair and caring world..... pie in the sky i know but it's just a thought.

Going on welfare should only be a temporary situation, It's good if it's not abused by a lot of people who deliberately have a lot of children so they can collect more from welfare. Other countries don't have this system. People are hardworking. And they strive for better jobs to improve their way of living relying entirely on their own resources and not expecting hand-outs. The welfare system here is so abused
It fosters laziness for a lot.

There is nothing wrong with welfare for those who truly need it. The problem is we have created a welfare mentality with people who are capable of working and taking responsibility for themselves. There is a "you owe me" mentality that has developed from the welfare system. Instead of helping people learn how to take care of themselves, we just hand them money and the cycle begins. Ever hear the proverb: "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a life time." There is no easy answer to the problem, but we must be able to distinguish between those who truly have needs and those who are milking the system.

Because of all those who have actually taken advantage of the system, it's tainted it for those who actually need it as just a Hand up and not a hand out.
Those women who have baby after baby just to get more money, but who drive the the welfare office in a brand new mercedes or BMW, carrying the Versache or Coach bags and the Hilfiger jeans.
PLEASE!
I was on welfare for a very short period of time, just after my divorce and I had moved back to my home state with my son. I was having trouble getting back on my feet and just needed to it to get me through. I was really grateful for the help I did recieve. And once I was back on my feet I didn't need it anymore. Haven't needed it since.
But I was treated as if I was some low life scum with no education, no brains, and only there to take advantage of the system. That was really humbling.

I think a lot of people, who believe in a smaller government, do not think it is the government's place to give free handouts to people. Welfare was originally created to help people during the great depression and it was only given out as compensation for certain jobs. Basically government jobs and big construction projects were created to give people jobs so they could work and earn welfare if you will... but since then it has become grossly distorted, freely giving away our tax dollars to non-working Americans and disabled Americans who may be disabled because they ate themselves too fat, or smoked their way onto oxygen and cannot do anything anymore. Should these people get government handouts? Should people who do not work and contribute to taxes get other people's taxes? Should we encourage free-loading and make it so simple and easy to achieve? A lot of people think not. Charity is meant to take care of the needy, not necessarily the government... which should maybe just take care of its tax-paying and law-abiding citizens. Where the government cannot provide, charity can and it will.
So... basically, I'd prefer to choose where my charity went, instead of having the government hand it out to whomever they wish, like drug addicts or lazy people who are taking advantage of the system.

Yes it is okay to give welfare to the people who truly need it but some many people out there do take advantage of it and that really upsets me...think about it ... for instance.. I know of a family who is on every form of federal assistance that is heard of and they sell illegal drugs...they have a nice brand new car and a nice big house...they are always in the most expensive clothes..they dont pay for anything...their house is paid for food formula everything is freaking paid for...God this annoys me.....
or those people who claim workers comp but can really work...I hate trashy people

There is nothing wrong with going on welfare or section 8 housing. But don't make it a multi generation thing where you, your mother, and your grandmother were all on welfare and section 8 housing too. These are meant as TEMPORARY help.
Clinton had the right idea of limiting this to a six month period.

The only problem with people being on welfare is that too many of them refuse to get a job. If you have a job, but aren't making ends meet, then it is fine. But, if you just want to sit around all day leeching off of other people's hard work, then you don't deserve it.

"Welfare" no longer exists like it did.
"Welfare" equals child support payments made by the father of illegitimate children. For a woman to receive welfare, she needs to pursue child support actions against the father.
So, if the government pays $500, it expects to collect $500 in child support. If the man refuses to pay child support, the government will stop "Welfare" after a period of time regardless if the woman has returned to work or not.
With other benefits, the states recycle money from the federal government (e.g. Social Security).
