1970-7 bbC2 1980 BBC1 then 1981-82 ITV
Rumoured to have differences with BBC management and left to go to ITV, in retaliation BBC would not repeat the series. Recently had a Goodies revival on BBC2 with selected episodes being introduced by all 3. Humour has changed and I didn't find it as funny second time around, but still better than some stuff on TV now

Because the more entertaining a programme is, the less likely the BBC (or ITV or Channel 4) is to repeat it.

For that matter how about "It ain't half hot mum". Never seen It on UK Gold or anywhere else. It can't be because It is offencive. Like you say, It is far better then the trash that the BBC inflict on us now and call comedy. I'm with you , bring back comedy that is funny!

You've just answered your own question.
It's much funnier than the rubbish they put on today, the BBC
don't want you to realize just how crap they now are in case you should dare to want to stop paying them

They had a special a little while back and quiet frankly it just seemed very dated. It was good then and perhaps the format would work again, but the sketches/gags themselves just haven't aged well
