curses is a library for writing console based (text based) "gui" applications (ie something like vim, pine, mutt, etc could use curses to draw text based windows, etc). the more famous one now a days is ncurses and that's in widespread use, especially in the linux world (the kernel uses it for its menuconfig, etc).
