Increase the memory. Get some information about your motherboard - how much memory it can handle at its max, what type of memory it needs (168 pin, 184 pin....DDR, SDRAM etc) See how many slots you have too
Then go on ebay, go to a shop, or go to a computer fair and get the required memory you think you need. Its normally best to double it - so 256mb would become 512mb
When you've bought it, open up your computer case, and find the original memory cards just lined up next to each other - you cant mistake them, there gonna look the same as the one you bought anyway!
Pull down the clips to release the old one(s), then insert the new ones, by placing one side in first, then the next. Job done if the clips are in place!
Start up your computer an thats it. It recognizes it automatically. It your comp. doesnt pass BIOS ((that little 'beep' when you start it)) there in the wrong order. Try arranging the cards in a different order.
Hope this helps! In unsure, see a technician

Sorry dude. But looks like it's time to buy a new computer. I bought a new computer a month ago, I also used to have a Windows 98 and it was so slow! Even though I had cleared up everything and had 2.0 gb of memory it was till slow and freezing up. The reason your computer is so slow is because the programs you want to run won't run as fast because your device is out-dated. Trust me, no matter what you do, it will be slow. Do the wise thing, and get yourself a new computer you deserve it. =)

Check your task manager to look at how many processes are running (not programs, processes). I found I was having issues and there was a virus that got through my virus filter that caused all kinds of processes to run in the background that were eating up memory and slowing down my computer. It wasn't an easy virus to remove either.
The really easy solution is to buy a new computer with a faster processor :)

Without upgrading.
Then defragmenting the hard drive would help.
If you are willing to spend a little money then buying more RAM (memory) would help.

It may not go any faster - Win 98 is quiet old now, if you are using it on new hardware, it may simply not be able to take advantage of it!!!

Use scandisk to clean up your computer, then use disk cleanup to reorganize your disk. Those options should both be in your control panel.
