Without any remaining wilderness we are committed whooly, without chance for even momentary reflection and rest, to a headlong drive into our techonological termite-life, the brave new world of a completely man-controlled enviornment.

I say agree. but can i be wrong? do you agree, disagree? why?
a common arugument against me has been mother nature, weather. but arent we seing the cuase of our actions now? global warming?

Absolutely Disagree...

First, who says that you have to be in a wilderness to have reflection and rest. Some people are actually more comfortable and able to rest better in a highly controlled environment than in a wilderness environment. Just because you are surrounded by technology does not mean that your life has to be on hyper-drive.

Second, as a whole, humans have become more conscious of preserving and restoring natural and wildlife areas. There are many areas that are specifically designated as areas that will be left entirely in their natural state. In addition, many areas that have been "developed" by humans are being purposely restored to be closer to their original condition. I am personally involved in projects by the US government to restore much of the wildlife habitat and natural variation on the Missouri River.

Third, if left alone long enough, even the most developed areas will eventually return to their "wilderness" conditions -- even without human intervention to restore it. I have been to places where whole cities have been abandoned long ago and little trace of the previous development and technology is evident.

I love and enjoy the "wild" outdoors, and applaud efforts to preserve it, but I honestly feel that our wilderness has little to fear from man's development.

dont be so worried, every generation thinks that it's actions will spell an end to humanity in some way, as for global warming remember - what goes up must come down. as temperatures rise water evaporates and this evaporation will over time form a haze of protection around the earth which will bring down global temperatures. in the short to medium term things may get a little wierd but we have had much worse in the past . britain has in its history been gripped by both an ice age and dessertification yet here we still are .
the oil and fossil fuels will soon run out and technology will take over- bio fuels for example when grown on a large enough scale will emit more oxygen and absorb more carbon di oxide than ten rain forrests.
i could go on but there is an old french saying which sums it up nicely - the more that things change, the more they stay the same...

Without remaining wilderness we are doomed period. We need the trees to produce oxygen for us to continue to breath. Brave New World though it may be as Huxley extaulted but not without the most powerful woman ever created - Mother Nature.

Disagree. Man being in charge of everything will doom Earth. No wild places mean not enough oxygen for people to breathe. Plus, there are so many places that are being destroyed already, that I think in fifty to one hundred years, Earth along with humans will be doomed.

I agree that if we deplete our forests we will have to fanatically and desperately rush for an alternative replenishment source for our atmosphere and the myriad other resources that our provided to us via trees. Such a replenishment source would come from technology - we would have to quickly invent something to avoid annihilation, simply put. Perhaps over time mother nature will grow back its forests.

Disagree because the human race is selfish, greedy, and extremely arrogant, and the earth and its creatures are doomed if man is in control.

i disagree that we are committed to it but it's most likely the direction we're all headed (sadly)

global warming might change the path that we're on, though.
