Um, I wouldn't have it next to the kitchen window, but it isn't like a port-o-potty either.
My parents and grandparents always composted, it keeps a lot of things out of the trash that could be "recycled" the natural way. Plus it can help your garden.
She is probably thinking, Compost = garbage. But not evreything that is food can go in a compost heap. Research it a little and print out he spesifics for her and that might help convince her.

No it usually does not smell. If it does throw a little lime on the pile. If you are really concerned there are a number of prefab compost bins that are covered which helps contain the odor.

It won't smell if you handle it correctly. Don't add any animal products, like meat scraps, bones, or bad cheese. Eggshells are okay.
Keep it covered with a layer of soil or finished compost, and keep it moist so it heats up well. If you can keep it cooking well enough, it will compost so fast it won't have time to stink!
Be careful of how much fresh grass clippings you add, that can be smelly too.

A good compost pile doesn't smell. Only if it doesn't get enough air or if it's too wet will it stink. I still wouldn't put it under the kitchen window, but if you stir it now and then it will be fine.

Don't put it too close to the house. Don't put any animal products into it and you should be OK. I agree that it shouldn't smell. If it does then you should mix it up. The only reason that it would smell would probably be if it got too wet. Then it would have a sour smell.

Not if you turn it about once a week and water it frequently.
It's great for plants.
