I am also trying to decide which school I should choose to go to. Tons of schools keep sending me brochures about their school and I have also used the internet to get facts on schools....also word of mouth by people who have attended certain schools or visited.
However, I don't think anything has been more valuable to me than actually visiting the schools. There's only so much you can read about and then you have to get a feel for the real thing. There have been times when I thought a school seemed great for me only to visit it and decide that I completely hated the school. Another school I visited didn't seem that great and the students seem depressed so I don't think I want to go to that one.
When you go visit schools, they take you an campus tours, housing tours, you can eat in the cafeteria, and you get to see the students. Try talking to some of the students too, especially the tour guides cause they are supposed to help you. I can't honestly say I've founded the perfect school for me yet, but visiting schools has at least helped me see which schools I DON'T want to go to and some that I MIGHT be interested in. Good luck.

I would go visit the campus and try to see the residence, lectures and labs (if applicable). Try to talk to some students as well. I think the most important fit is the program followed by the atmosphere. If you hate large crowds, there is a good chance you'll hate a large school. Also, I would not pick a school just based on reputation. Your own personal health and hapiness is way more important than prestige, though at a young age this may not be obvious.

That is why you can go on their website, check it out, ask other students who have gone there. Even so, there are still going to be some bad classes/teachers in a good school. All you have to do is take the chance and see how it turns out. If you don't like the class or teacher, you can drop it before you get charged and try another class. There is no shame in doing that, I did that once before, best decision I ever made.

To be honest it's rare for a college not to be the right one, especially if it's your first college experience because you'll have nothing to campare against. You'll make friends and think back on what it would be like if you hadn't gone to that college and met those people. And the truth is, you would have met people just as cool and made friendships just as strong.
If you find good friends and are motivated to do well in your classes then it's the right school.

choose based on the degree you want, the area around which you are interested in living, the dinamics of the other students, the profs and faculty, etc ...
you really need to tour the campus first. some colleges even have programs where you can stay the night with a current student to get a feel for staying on that campus etc.

Sometimes you don't know. Even with all the campus tours and visits, you just sometimes have to follow your gut instinct and stick it out the first semester.
When you go on the visit, you have to ask yourself "do i see myself here for 4 years of my life?"
Thankfully, I ended up choosing the right college but it didn't feel that way until after my first semester had ended.

Did you go on an overnight visit? Most colleges offer them, where you can stay in a dorm and actually sit in on classes. That would be the best way to tell if it is the right place for you.
