You could call it culture, you could call it politics. Many Brits I knew had no interest in guns. The reality is, is that eventually all London police will need to be armed to respond to the increase in gun violence, and many officials realize this. I spent 5 months there, and the violence was increasing, not to the level of America, not nearly, but enough to potentially warrant arming London police eventually, as far as the rest of the nation, no idea.

Because, it only leads to an escalation of violence. This has been proved worldwide. Take Barbados and Trinidad both Caribbean countries and near neighbours. In the former the police are armed with truncheons as in the UK and the violent crime rate is relatively low. In the latter the police have guns and a high murder rate.
Giving the police guns would NOT cause the villans to take a step back. Rather it would cause them to get more guns to keep up with the police.

Stop for a moment and look at this Four out of Five police officers in a recent survey of some 50,000 of their members of the Police Federation said they were opposed to an armed police force I think that speaks volumes and answers your question and if anyone should know about the police carrying guns the police themselves should.

The problem with carrying guns is that it encourages to villians to carry guns too. There is also an arguement that if you have a gun and the villian manages to acquire it during a struggle for example, they then have access to a lethal weapon that they did not bring to the crime.
We are very lucky in the UK to have such low gun crime and the fact that our police do not carry them contributes to it. I hope the day never arrives when our police carry guns routinely.

Because our police force are so bloody useless, if they were armed all the time they'd be killing Innocent people all over the place.
With guns come responsibility and our boys in blue are as a
given rule are barely to be trusted to dress themselves in the morning.

several reasons.
1 plod isnt trained for it.
2 plod isnt equipped mentally to do the task.
3 plod has 2 o levels... and hes as scared as teh robber or terrorist hes about to pop.
4. plod gets guns, criminals get bigger guns, and use them.
5 too many innocents will die in the crossfire...
6 this is england..not a 3rd world police state. (contrary to common opinion)

I agree Snooky but it's raising the bar. I don't know the stats but I would think Police Officers being shot is still low (but not acceptable) in comparison.

I know someone from New Castle who says most fights are just fights. Very rarely will someone pull out a gun or knife. Maybe a bat and chain.
I guess they feel their crime isn't violent or deadly enough to warrant it.
