Yes, I think so. It's instinctive to be drawn to what is attractive or amusing or clever. So take your time deciding what to put up to replace gray face.

And please, don't go changing your picture all the time. People who are fond of you will find you more quickly if you put up something nice, and then let it get familiar.

And don't use the avatar program unless you are willing to put some time into making one that is exceptional. Too many people look alike around here!

No. I don't even look at a display picture when I'm first answering a question, and if I do notice someone with an attractive picture I tend to assume that it's not really them.
