"The mammals are the class of vertebrate animals characterized by the presence of mammary glands, which in females produce milk for the nourishment of young; the presence of hair or fur; and endothermic or "warm-blooded" bodies."

While clearly fictional, ents, for the sake of argument, are sentient plants.

Okay, to correct what someone else said above, just because it's fiction doesn't mean people cannot consider it an animal. The world of Star Wars is fiction, but everyone would call an Ewok an animal and most likely a mammal. Honestly people stop taking things that seriously and have some fun. Anyway, I do not think that Tolkien ever goes into enough detail on Ents for us to determine if they are plant or animal. My best guess would be that Ents are a highly evolved type of sentient tree (though I do not think Tolkien leaves room for evolution in his books). I mean clearly they look exactly like trees so why wouldn't they be trees? I mean, it could be an animal with awesome camouflage, but that more defined type of camouflage is really only seen in insects, such as the walking stick. So yeah I stick with my theory and say that Ents are plants, more specifically: sentient trees. Now, my question is how would they reproduce? If they were mammals could you imagine them having sex? Or if my theory is correct and they're plants... would they pollinate?

One of the primary requirements in the classification of an animal be that the animal actually be REAL.

Its from Lord of the Rings - hence, it isn't real so the answer is automatically no.

However in fiction when they name ficticious creatures, the animal can be whatever the script writer proclaims the animal to be.
In the movie Aliens for example, they created a new word "xenomorph" to describe the fiction alien. Therefore, it is exactly that.

The only way to answer this question is to ask Peter Jackson.

I do also believe the ENT would fall under a member of the plant kingdom though since it was similar to a tree.

No. Ents are sentient trees and aren't even members of the animal kingdom.

No, they are trees. They walk, they talk, they kill orks, but they are still trees.
