I heard about beaches in Japan that when you walk on the sand it makes a noise. Thus, they call it singing sand. Is this true?

They call it "singing sands" in other parts of the world too (Baltic countries, Russia, I believe Bulgaria)

Yes, it also occurs in many other places. The sand has to be of a certain size and texture, so that when a weight is pressed on it, such as a food step, the material will rub against itself to create a dull rasping sound, like a quiet roar.

There was a patch of it at the dunes in Death Valley. The sound reminded me of one of those little boxes that make a "moo" cow sound, but very quiet.

Sure are...

Singing sand, or barking sand, is sand that emits sounds of either high or low frequency under pressure. The sound emission is usually triggered by wind passing over dunes or by walking on the sand. The sound is generated by shear stress.
