I had the same problem all through adolescence. I always had to go home sick from school every month. The solution for me was going on the birth control pill. My periods became much lighter and shorter and the cramps were much milder. Even if you're not sexually active, it may be worth it to you to try the pill just to get some relief.

The cramping is a normal way the body sheds the menstrual fluid. That they are severe may mean you need to get checked out for hormonal imbalance or polycystic ovaries.

Make sure your doctor checks your hormone levels before prescribing any medication, as when I got the depo-provera shot for a dysfunctional uterine bleed, it flipped me from low blood sugar to diabetes.

This is very common, my wife got some relief by going on the pill. Don't know the science of why this helped but it cut down on her discomfort by about 80%. Maybe check with your doc to see what he/she would recommend. They can probably do something to help you. No reason to be in pain. Good luck.

the cramps are caused by your uterus having contractions in order to get rid of the contents. so basically, in order for you to bleed and get rid of the uterine lining you're shedding, your uterus cramps (after all the uterus is a big muscle). these cramps you have once a month are similar to pregnancy contractions except much, much less severe and much much less painful :)
