Hi skateboarder,
I had the same problem so I spray it with my cooking spray each time I fill it and no ants or bees!

Ok, to kill bees, get a bottle of 409 or Fantastic.
Spray it on the bees and they will actually fall from the sky!! (Yep, I have done this one, so I know it works!)...
Or, a can of WD-40 and shoot it at the bees (I like the other, because it offers a wide spray, instead of a thin line...never was good at aimin :)
Ants, just get some Boric Acid Powder at your nearest pharmacy or drug store, and sprinkle it around the base of the tree that you have the humming bird feeder in... It will kill them in no time.
I wish you well..
Jesse

Get a feeder that has little plastic guards on the drinking stem. also bird stores carry a little cup like container that you hang between the feeder and the ground and fill with water to keep the ants away.

For ants, try this tip I received just last week. Sprinkle the contents of packages containing Aspartame, the artificial sweetener found in NutraSweet and Equal around any areas both inside the home and in the yard where you have an ant problem. I am told it even works on Fire Ants. Good luck.

I have put Vaseline on the outside of the feeder to deter ants. But it was messy. I don't see the harm in the hummers sharing the nectar.

My parents have the same problems at their house. But they have bees too! I do not know how to keep this from happening but I am glad you asked the question. I am going to monitor the answers and hopefully get some ideas for them.

bees are attracted to soda and things that are sweet..i heard if you leave an empty bottle of soda nearby the bees will fly right in....leave it about half full and most likely they won't be able to fly up and out and they'll drown in the soda....it should keep them out.....
and if you see any bees on the bird feeder i'd get some RAID...it makes flies run on the ground and begin to dissolve....
as a kid that's afraid of bees....i'd like to see those things dissolve.....
it doesn't just have to be soda....sweeteners...apple juice...just something that's easy to fly in and hard to fly out of....there are also bee traps....and don't forget if you see the nest to kill it....
