I want to get into rock climbing. Where is the best place to start?

I would like to start getting into outdoor sports such as rock climbing or hiking, but I don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

start climbing in an indoor climbing gym...like vertical endeavors (depending on where you live...there might be something else) but just google "indoor climbing gym (insert your city)" and that should come up with something

almost all gyms offer classes to get new climbers familiar with the basics and to get them started with good technique
