I believe the American Dream in the past was having a house that was paid for. Nowadays, I believe the American Dream is not to have to pay those high property taxes and to have a good paying job to pay for all those taxes. I think the American Dream is wishing the old times back, when life didn't seem to be so stressfull and everybody could trust everybody and nobody had to lock their front door.

Let's see... my family are immigrants. We moved to the US 4 years ago to achieve the "American Dream." For the past 4 years, we did not live in a luxurious house, have butlers and maids, drive Porsch or limousines like my friends and families back from where we're from think. Instead, our family with 5 people live in a tiny condo. My dad has to go to work early in the morning till late at night. Life is hard. And people bite when hardship comes. Is THIS the American Dream we are all waiting for?? Hell no!! Then what is it and where can I make it come true?
"American Dream" is just a mere phrase, and like any other conversational phrase, it gets twisted when people pass it from mouth to mouth, from house to house, from city to city, and from all around the world.

In the 1950's it used to be simply having a house in the suburbs with a father figure in the house having a suit-and-tie job, a stay at home mom, and two children: one boy and one girl. Now-a-days, things have changed. The American dream now seems to simply be making as much money as possible and living life to the fullest. Lots of vacations, Lots of good scenery. Upscale restaurants, Festive nights, Family get-togethers, and Above average income.

I have friends who buy big mortgages saying that they have tax deduction. After that they got so afraid of loosing their jobs and become slave to the house payment.
Banks and real estate brokers are like flies everywhere making you their slaves.
No one has extra cash saved and all are working so hard. Stressful but enjoyable until they have divorces and their kids drop out from school and such..
But over all I think the system is good for hard working people and it is your choice not to over stress yourself being a slave for everything you think you need to supply for your family.
but wives and neighbors and friends all got these and you become lost in competition..

Capitalism... I think it is the chance to advance as long as you are willing to work hard. What you make, you keep... there is no futile system where you are working for other people.
