It's some kind of new trend. I've seen it in questions and answers on this site, but I have no idea what people are talking about when they say it!

"Emo" is one of these weird words that really got bastardized by pop culture. It was originally a type of punk in the 1980s, and its meaning changed several times since. It's short for "Emotional" and refers to a very emotion-driven form of punk and/or pop rock. The problem with the term, of course, is that ALL music is, to some degree, emotion-driven. And I think any band with the Emo label is going to tell you they consider themselves rock, not Emo, and sort of pose the question "what is Emo anyways?"

Nowadays it really refers to the whiney perky pop rock that's out nowadays that are heavily influenced by Dashboard Confessional (i.e. oh my life is so miserable, sob sob) with a strong dash of Green Day just to make it more consumable.

And "emo kids" are kids who listen to emo and dress a certain way. It's a mish-mash of styles that borrows from nerd, indie, punk, goth, and (mostly) skater. If you want to be an emo kid, Hot Topic is going to be your starting point. While some of these kids will say "hey I'm not emo, I've got my own thing going on!" (yea right), some really go all out to BE "emo." And THIS is where the whole term and look comes from- the kids that are trying to establish and perpetuate this massive nation-wide subculture genre to fit into. So it ends up really having little to do with music, and more to do with how you act, how you dress, and who you hang out with (as well as what bands to listen to- hence, "Emo" bands)

My life is spiraling downward
I couldn’t get enough money to go to the Blood Red Romance and Suffocate Me Dry concert
It sucks cause they play some of my favorite songs like “Stab my heart because I love you” and “Rip apart my soul” and of course “Stabby rip stab stab” And It doesn’t help that I couldn’t get my hair to do that flippy thing either…like that guy from that band can do….some days you know...

I think it stands for Emotional. I just found out these kids like a band called Dashboard Confessional because they had a concert in my town and the emo kids were everywhere. They cry and whine every time their girlfriend does anything to them. They are a bunch of babies.

emo=emotional, it is a type of music that was founded a few years ago by a group of musicians like no other, and ever since it has grown bigger and stronger, but most people reffer to it as a type of gothic punk, they r wrong, if you think of it today no one who says they r gothic is just another posewr, gothis was founded during the rennasance period and has died over the years. so emo is just a type of punk rock. i am emo. but be care ful of those posers that say they r emo, but have everything their way.

Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

I first heard about it a year ago when I saw it as a station on AOL Radio. "Emo" is short for "emotional". It's considered to be a whiny style of music. So I guess to sum it up, it could be called "upset" music.

emo...aka emotional. It refers to bands such as My Chemical Romance and A.F.I. Its mostly the rocker persona where they are winy and swinging on their emotions. A common thing in songs by such artists is like 'why did you leave me...I miss you.' and then the next second they are like 'I hate you, I'm sooo over you'. That is what is meant by EMO.
