I did an extensive search on Wikipedia and the hockeydb.
Realistically, it's so obscure that you might be best off with a newspaper. See if the Atlanta Journal Constitution has records. It's so bizzare, I'm sure it made headlines when it happeended at least in Sports.

Danny Heatley was driving a car when his good friend and fellow player was killed. It was not a Karate chop. His "best friend" Dan Snyder died from massive head injuries suffered in a car wreck driven by All-star teammate Dany Heatley.

i lived in atl when that happened... kinda a bad move drivin a ferrari down that street...
but alas thats teh EA curse... anyone on the cover of a EA sports game loses somethin or somethin bad happens to em...
ie - donaovan mcnabb, danny heatley, allen iverson, ray lewis,
etc etc... its like the sports illustrated curse... except people die
