Gianluigi Buffon because:
1) He is the best goalkeeper in the world
2) He proves it consistently
3) He keeps a low profile
4) At the time this is written he hasn't left Juventus in a time of need.
5) Even though he's WORLD CHAMPION
6) And... he has a beautiful girlfriend: Alena Seredova

i would have to say kaka. though brasil is not my favorite team, they have a beautiful way of playing. kaka is still young but so extremely talented and a true team player. he seems like a nice guy (based on the interviews ive seen with him) and seems to have a real passion for the game. he doesnt "cheat" or "dive" and no one really has anything to complain about him.

i think the future generation of football players should look up to someone who they may have a chance of playing with....someone who they can relate to but also learn from ....someone who isnt just a picture in some hall of fame.

Well I am not going to mention older/retired players as you asked for players who will influence our future generations. I think Messi, Torres and Podolski are three examples of great young players with great skill and attitude. There are others, Rooney and C Ronaldo who will be inspirational also. Rooney needs to keep his head in the game and not let his frustration be so evident and Ronaldo, well sorry but he needs to get his ego and attitude right because aside from that he is a great talent. We also have other youngsters on the rise, and how they handle the pressure will be crucial to their development and respect status. But right now it's Messi for me. He is just such a level headed young man without ego problems who is the biggest talent on the rise.

Steven Gerrard... Fabio Cannavaro.... Gianluigi Buffon... Alessandro Del Piero!!

For Australia it has to be Lucas Neill, Tim Cahill and Marco Bresciano.

Fantastic question... its about time someone asked a decent question about the future!!!

Definitely NOT Zidane, he is anything but a good example.

I would pick Cannavaro. Not only is he formidable, but an exceptional player with great performance skills, loyal and in possess of high moral standards when it comes to sportmanship and family.

Future generation needs to learn something else than violence,
I vote for Gigi Buffon.

I like Zidane, but I don't think he should be the ideal example even though he had reasons for doing Watt he did, I think the ideal example would and as always been Brazilian Pele.
