I think the question is more subtle than that. All religions can be interpreted more than one way (hence all the denominations and sects), and each country/goverment can influence the parts of them that are most predominant.

So, in a country where private ownership, freedom of speech, and individual rights rule, religions can get more light shown on their teachings that intersect with these.

On the surface, protestant sects that seem more condusive to not following a human 'authority', are not 'locked into a forced belief' and 'can give there money where they want it' are very popular because of this, which parallels the goverment emphasis I discussed earlier.

Our country opens it's borders to all religions but we have only had Christian/deist presidents so this tells me that the bulk of the nation is or has been Christian. We do have many other religions in politics it's just they haven't made it to the presidential level yet.

As far as our outward practices of our leaders, both secular and religious, our sole religion is capitalism.

Through the propaganda machine, they say democracy and christianity, as well as all religions are welcome.

The separation of Church and State is less about prayer in schools and more about lack of religious morality in our treatment of other countries without the benefits we enjoy...Like the largest nuclear arsenal in the world, even bigger than Russian, Chinese, & all the other nuclear states combined

Individually, US citizens belong to many different religions. In many different variations.

As a country, our Constitution forbids any one religion from being the dominant belief system, whether they happen to be in the majority or not.
