If you are asking how did the Catholic Church start, it began following the resurrection of Jesus Christ in 30AD when his followers took the message of Christianity to the know world. It was called the catholic church because it was "worldwide" - which is what catholic means.
There was only one (official) church until the 4-5th century when a split in the Roman Empire caused a similar split between the eastern Roman church and the western Bryzatine church. The Roman church became known as the Roman Catholic Church, while the western part became the Orthodox church.
In the 1500s the Catholic church had a second major split and the Protestant churches began, led by a German monk named Martin Luther. Since, hundreds of different Protestant groups have formed.
The Catholic church still remains is the single largest Christian denomination today.
Hope that is what you were asking...

Of course there are other answers, but I'd argue that Catholicism began when the Roman emperor Constantine made it the official state religion after his "Cross of Gold" victory at the Milvian Bridge in 313 CE. That's what really established the religion that dominated the West for the next 1200 years until the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century.
Before Constantine, Christianity was rather fragmented -- more like sects -- with theologians arguing various esoteric doctrinal points. Constantine put an end to that, told the clerics to get their act together, and really unified the church.
I'd say that's what gave birth to the Roman Catholic Church -- as opposed to the birth of Christianity itself.

Christ told Perer "you are my rock, and upon this rock I will build my Church"
As a result, peter created the Catholic Church and became the first Pope. Since then, every pope has been the successor to St. Peter.
Back then, when you were a christain, it meant you were a catholic. But alot of protestants split from the church, but still claim to be christians.

If you are asking how Catholicism started, Catholics would say that Jesus started the church when he told Peter in Mat 16:18: "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Catholics would add the New Testament story about the last supper when Jesus offered bread and wine and said "Do this in remembrance of me," and also when he gave the Apostles the power to forgive sins in John 20:21-23: "Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them: and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained."
Others might say that Jesus did not intend to create a new Church, and that St. Paul was more influential in building Christianity as a separate religion.
