Stephen King I reckon.

I liked some of Herbert's earlier books- The Rats, The Fog etc, but Stephen King is far greater in developing characters, plot and in story telling in general. Herbert is good but King is far better and has a far greater range of styles. e.g. The Green Mile, The Gunslinger series, The Shawshank Redemption.

I love Stephen King but I never read James Herbert. After reading your question I looked him up and now I'm intrigued by some of his books - off to the bookstore tomorrow!

They're both good - I prefer James Herbert just because the locations etc. are UK ones. If you like that sort of thing check out Shaun Hutson & Graham Masterton (& Dean Koontz as already mentioned)

Mr King. More diverse vocabulary, more depth of plot and character development, better and more involving syntax, and (IMHO) better plots and good old fashioned story telling. Aso more prolific, which doesn't necessarily make him better. Not to disparage james Herbert, who is also good fun and no mean storyteller. Clive barker and Dean Koontz just shave him for me tho'. But I gave up reading such teen horror books many years ago.
