My name is James and I have always gone by James and have always wondered the same thing. Why do MEN go back different names.. William - Bill, Anthony - Tony, Richard - Dick, All I can think of is perhaps because most of those names are very common names during WW2 people took diferent names so you if you have 8 guys in your platoon named James you could narrow it down to a few james, a few jimmys and a few jims.. thats only guess i have

I guess the same reason why guys names are Robert,Richard and William and go by Bob,Dick and Bill. The question that I wonder how come there aren't that many woman names like that?I have a Uncle Richard and can't picture myself calling him Dick.Maybe it's just the way it is a shorter version of the name. Then why isn't Robert Rob instead of Bob.William is Bill but why not just Will.Don't ask about Richard I don't get it with Dick as a nickname.
