I recommend McAfee Security Suite...everything on it :)
This is what I do to protect my computer:
> Scan your computer for spyware/adware using a FREE software from Microsoft called Windows Defender: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

> You can download a FREE antivirus software:
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/Programs/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

> You can buy Webroot Spy Sweeper here, it's very nice, safe and very up-to-date:

> MSN Toolbar - FREE:
http://toolbar.live.com/?mkt=en-us

> Use Windows Update to make sure you have the latest security updates: http://www.windowsupdate.com

> You can download the latest version of Internet Explorer, it's the new version, fast, clean and secure:

Good luck and I hope these solutions solve your problem, if you need more extra help, contact me :)

AdAware is the best utility for this purpose. But nothings beats a wellconfigured system with a regularly updated antivirus (like AVG) and a good firewall (like ZoneAlarm). BY keeping unnecessary ports closed and by blocking suspicious programs accessing net you can prevent almost 99.9% spyware/trojan/virus from infectnig your system.

An alert user with the right tools just mentioned all it takes to stay secure.

My first warning BE CAREFUL.

There ARE a few free ones that actually work and there are TONS of free ones that you might actually consider to be spyware themselves. So you have to be careful about what you download.

My recommendations is the Microsoft Windows Defender application. It's free and works well. You can download it here...

The Microsoft tool does a great job of preventing infection, but isn't the best tool for repairing your PC if it's already infected. You may have to get some other Spyware remover that you'll actually have to purchase to do that.

Good luck friend!

The Ad-aware and Spybot Seek&Destroy combination works good. (Both free at download.com). As they use different list to id spyware, one may get something the other misses. Since both free versions have to be run manually to work, download MS Defender from Microsoft.com (again free). It runs all the time and can help prevent future infections.

Spybot and Ad-Aware are two really good ones, but my personal favorite is the Windows Defender located at http://www.microsoft.com/spyware - its free and offered by microsoft to anyone who has a valid genuine copy of windows installed on their PC...

Check out the current issue of Consumer Reports. They rated all the utilities.

Yes Spybot and AdAware are good ones. Use them together. Usually one will catch some stuff and the Other will catch the rest.
