Truth is, if somebody wants a bike bad enough, they will go through extremes to take it. You want to limit their temptation. If they don't see it, they won't know where to find it. Apartment carports, parking structures, bike shows, hotels/motels, malls and movie theaters are well known settings for bike thieves. Locks can be broken but it makes obstacles for the thief. Try to keep the bike locked up in a locked area such as a living room or a garage. Lojack is available for bikes but the unit takes up space. Unless you have a large touring bike, the thief will look in the 2-3 hiding places on the bike. Choppers don't have a chance with Lojack. Insurance is important. Make sure that you read the contract closely because not all theft insurance is the same. Good luck.

A big *** chain and padlock, tied to something immovable!
Actually, any kind of visible lock or security device will deter most casual thiefs. If they can't get it quickly, they'll pass on it and go after someone else's bike that may be easier for them to grab. Lojack or pager security alarms are not all that effective for motorcycles, because by the time your pager goes off, the bike is in the back of a truck, going down the highway.
Always carry theft insurance on your bike, and make sure whatever anti-theft devices are installed are used. Too many times, a theft could have been prevented if the rider had taken the time to use his locks instead of leaving them in the saddle bag.

Hey, here's a SERIOUS answer.
Neither my husband nor I routinely secure our bikes when we're out and about. He seems to think keeping it in gear is better than in neutral, and of course you turn the key to the lock position.
A disc lock should suffice for most areas. Just don't forget you have it on!
I think if you're riding it to areas that are so bad you're worried, you should stop taking the bike there! If a disc lock won't give you enough peace of mind, it's time to reevaluate.
I know nothing about bike alarms, but if there is such a thing as a pager alarm, which would only go off if the bike is compromised in some way, that would be ok. But you don't want something that goes off in a stiff breeze.
As for storage....that's another story. But that wasn't your question.

There really is no best security....if they want it they will get it. Very few items cost 10 thousand dollars and can be carried away in 1 minute flat. I would invest in a krytonite chain and the xena lock-the lock has an electronic loud alarm if disturbed. If you have a really expensive bike they have lo-jack to trace your stolen bike for 600. The best security if get a bike not attractive to thieves. A brand new sportsbike will be more attractive than a 98 honda shadow. Remember to pick a best answer. Good luck

Everyone else here has already given you the answer.
I just wanted to add my two cents of.... if the thief really wants it, he'll take it. Yes, most bikes can be lifted into the back of a pickup. Yes, with a screwdriver or other tools, the bike can be stripped for parts even with a disk lock et al.
While you can take certain precautions, there reaches a point where you just have to hope for the best and that the thief is one block over taking someone else's bike.

No kidding, the very best anti-theft device I've ever seen is a big dog tied to a bike.
My son's bike was stolen from his apt. complex. It took him a year to get another bike. Now his bike is chained to an iron fence with one of those plastic coated cables with the lock. Don't fool around with tow chains and other things that can be cut off with bolt cutters. Anything you spend on security is going to be cheaper than another bike.

Club colors and a pitbull chained to the bike. Or park it in your livingroom. For securing it other than at home disc locks will work. As well as locking your forks. Check out the page below on the j&p cycles site. Lots of locks and alarms.

They make a solid chain called a Cobra...uses a round key, like a coke machine key. So hard you need a plasma cutter to get it off. They'll have to carry the thing out if they want it.
