Nope. The physical size used is different from laptop to desktop
You can buy additional RAM for your laptop (at best prices) through http://www.pricewatch.com

the answer is no.

First off Notebook ram is different shape and size than Desktop ram. Even if it was the same type of ram it would never fit.

Second There are many different types of ram, speeds etc and only specific types work on specific computers

for example I have an old computer (for laymans terms it is 6 years old)

but the technical specs are :
Pentium III 667 Mhz (overclocked to 750Mhz FSB of 166mhz)
512 SDRAM 100mhz
20 Gigs Hard drive
2D/3D Trio S3 4 MB Graphics AGP 2x

My newer computer has the following specs

Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz HT FSB 800Mhz
2 Gigs DDR 400 Dual Channel (400Mhz)
SATA 160 Gigs 7200 rpm (80 x 2) -not using RAID config
AGP 8X x700 Pro 256 MB video Ram using NGO Optimized Drivers
8Mb Down/1 Up Cable Bandwith

Now lets look at the ram of each computer (since this is what you are interested in)

Computer 1: 512 MB SDRAM 100Mhz (PC133)
Computer 2 2 Gigabytes DDR400 (PC3200)

When you purchase RAM you need to know the ram type which in our case is PC 133 for the granny box and PC 3200 for the new one.

Ram from old computers using PC133 can NEVER be mixed with newer types of ram such as DDR400 or DDR2. Attempting to do so will result in falure to boot in computers until the incompatible ram type is removed. Before this week I would have said that there is no risk of damage to the motherboard, but I was proven wrong. When a friend tried to put ram in his computer and did NOT seat it correctly in the ram slot, he actually melted slot 2 on his motherboard . So now I must advise you to be 100% certain the ram is installed fully before powering on.

Good luck.

No, RAM will not store memory once the computer is turned off... also they have different number of pins... so a laptops RAM(200 pins) is too small for a PC slot with 240 pins. There arent any files on your old laptops RAM... its only for temporary data.

No. They are of different form factors.

Most desktop ram is 184pin DDR Dimms and most notebooks are 200pin DDR SO-DIMMS.

I would suggest buying it from Crucial as they guarantee compatibility. For your notebook, the page is:
http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Acer%2BTravelMate&mfr=Acer&tabid=AM&model=TravelMate+2420&submit=Go

Hope this helps!

I can not say now,

first check both RAM type, if is same yo can try or ir it's different you not to install the RAM.

RAM type eg.: SIPP , DIP , SIMM, DIMM, SO-DIMM

Small outline DIMM (SO-DIMM). Smaller version of the DIMM, used in laptops. Comes in versions with:
1. 72 pins (32-bit)
2. 144 pins (64-bit)
3. 200 pins (72-bit)
Small outline RIMM (SO-RIMM). Smaller version of the RIMM, used in laptops

No, no, no, no! You can not use desktop memory for laptop. Both use different kinds of memory chips. If you take a look at both of the memory chips, you'll noticed that the sizes are different.

Good luck.

Probably not, ram slots for laptops are usually smaller (SO-DIMM). Desktop ram is usually DIMM.
