Not before baby is 2 months old and has been nursing well for at least a month if at all possible. Then it depends on what you need it for. If you *don't* need pumped milk, then you don't need a pump and you don't need to pump. If you will be returning to work or school, then start pumping 2-3 weeks before the first day you'll be leaving baby. If you will be missing a single feeding, pump a little bit every morning for 3-7 days and keep it in the fridge. And while you are away from baby, pump at least as often as she/he would be nursing in order to prevent a breast infection. You may need to pump more than that because a pump is never as effective as a nursing baby.

It depends on what your reasons for wanting to express milk are. Give us more info and we can give you better answers.

If you are wanting to pump just to have some milk for occasional bottles, morning is better than evening. You can also pump one side while baby nurses on the other. Or pump for a little while after a feeding.

If you are looking to increase your milk production, as soon as you have your baby, and after every feeding for 10-15 min on each side. I did this with my first and successfully breastfed for over a year. I didn't with my second, and was only able to breastfeed for 5 months, and was VERY disappointed. I encourage pumping asap when you have your baby.
