always start by simplifing and trying to get the x's on the same side
5x - 7 -8x + 2 < 3(2x +5)
-3X -5 < 6x +15
-9X < 20
X > -20/9 (i think you flip the < > when you divide.. but you might want to double check that with your textbook)

3(2x+5)= 6x+15
5x-7-8x+2= -5-3x
Thus the new equation is
-5-3x=6x+15
-9x=20
x=-20/9
thus at x=-20/9 both equations have the same answer, so now you pick two numbers suxh as x=0 and x=-2 to find out which gives the correct statement above and say that x is either > or < than -20/9.

Expand the right hand side. Then take all the terms with 'x' to the left and all constants to the right. Add them just like you would any other normal addition. Then if the term in 'x' has a coefficient, divide both sides of the equation by that coefficient. Remeber to reverse the equality sign if the coefficient is negative.
Voilá, you have your answer.
Good luck!

It's all about understanding the process.Solve each piece of the equation.
Do the left side and the right side separately. You must have already had enough algebra to solve a single variable equation.
After you've analyzed (reduced the complexity on) each side, you'll get to a result where "X=" something for each side.
Once you have that done, you can then compare the two two 'somethings' to determine if one must be less than the other.

Does that help? Just remember that if you ahve to divide both sides by a negative number, the sign changes.
