Work both smart and hard, and in a field you really like. Be cautious about spending money, and be sure you get your money's worth when you do spend. Use cash, not credit cards. Always save something out of every check. Live below your means - that means don't spend all you make, but spend less than you make. Invest for the future.
Also, "rich" is not only an economic term. Having a loving family and good friends also enriches you, as does making a contribution to the society in which you live.

I worked very hard until one day I had enough money to buy a metal detector. Then I used the metal detector on every inch of my backyard until I found a very old and beat up metal lamp. I polished it, and by rubbing the lamp, a genie appeared to grant me a wish. I wished for lots of money, and now I'm rich. I strongly suggest doing the same. Although if I had it to do all over again, I might just buy a lottery ticket every week until I won.
