Basically you're correct. Man needed answers to explain his internal self and the physical world around him. You have to put yourself in their shoes, say, some twenty thousand years ago. They dreamed of things and wanted an explanation for them. Those twinkling lights which can only be seen at night. Why? Some of them you can almost make a picture (ie: Orion constellation).
You get my drift?

Humans are the only beings on earth that have a desire to understand their purpose in life. We are the only ones who ask "Why am I here?"
Religions were created to help answer that question. Some believe that they were just made up by man to control what other people believe. Others believe that God, or another spirit type, spoke to people here on earth and the religions formed as people on earth began to carry out God's word.
I don't think I or anyone else in this forum could answer that question for you. It is something you have to find within yourself and determine what you believe. It is proven that a person's happiness has a direct correlation to their beliefs (i.e. stronger the belief, the happier they are). That doesn't mean that you have to believe in current organized religions, just that you have to have faith and belief in something.

Religions evolved as an attempt to explain the world. There are people who seek p[eace and wonder why it isn't so, there are people who want to explain origins, and there are people who will take advantage of the structure of formal religions to seek power. Whatever your faith, don't neglect to look within yourself to see if a thing is so rather than blindly accept it.

There is a current theory that the need for humans to believe in deities is an evolutionary function and hard-wired into our brains.

What do you think it is in humans that makes us want to believe in something? Ask yourself that question first. Once you find the answer to that question, you'll have answered your own.
