I am looking at a 97 Galant that looks like it's in perfect condition. The only problem is that I'm not very familar with the Mitsubishi brand. I have a suspicion it's not as good as the other brands I've been looking at (Honda, Toyota, Nissan). Does anyone have any advice?

Take it for a test drive. Take it all in, then come back the next day and test drive it again. Usually, the second time will be your best impression.

Mitsubishi cars are not the worst, but they're far from the best when it comes to reliability. If it has high miles (i.e. more than 15k per year or more than 50k-60k) look away.

You can do research on a specific model by either going online to Consumer Reports or go down to your local library and look up their special Auto Guide Issue and view their reliability ratings.

Also, Mitsu doesn't hold their resale value very well, and this is a testimony to their reliability -or somewhat lack thereof.

It is a good car! Been there and have not had an issue. Of course it also depends on the current status. Is it in good condition? Carfax check is ok? Oil changes and all? No major repairs?

Mitsubishi is a well-known brand and a serious competitor to Toyota in some other countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, but if you live in the States and you want a car that is going to have better resale value, then stick to Toyota or Honda.

Do NOT go there...Mitsubishi's are like American 80's cars...anything more than 60,000 miles and they crumble like cookies! Bad cars, been there and done that with Mitsu.

Also stay away from Nissan.

Your best bet is a Honda or Toyota. Preferably from a 1-owner, and a complete carfax as well as inspection which is $$$ well spend in the long run to have a reliable car!

Honda's are the most reliable no competition. Toyota's are very good also. Nissan's are average and Mitsu's are junk. They make some very cool cars (Eclipse and Evo) but if looking good and going fast are not your priority's then stay away. Many have major problems after 60K then more after 100k. Good luck! (They also make nice But expensive to own TVs.)

They are okay cars...they only bad thing about them is that the car parts are really expensive...more than hondas ...so you should hope that if you do buy the car that it wont have any mechanical problems in the future
