I don't believe in violence meeting violence, there must be a peaceful way of avoiding these problems.

What needs to be done to help stop this. Anyone have any ideas?

I know not all Muslims are terrorists.... however look at the news from London today, you will see 21 terrorists arrested and 21 of them are Muslims.
I have plenty of Muslim friends who are not terrorists.

not only do you not believe in violence meeting violence, the majority of the billion or more muslims on earth also share that belief and are not terrorists. just because it so happens that some of the people who do these terrorist activities are muslims should not make you think that all muslims are terrorists or that muslim people are, in general, responsible for terrorism all over the world. each religion has extremists, and a religion should be judged based on what it says and preaches, not what extremists say and do.

the quran says, "Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors." (5:32).

as to the comment of one of the people who answered this question about the fact that muslims are not going to be allowed "to impose their religion on the rest of the world" -- see what the Quran says about that - "There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong." (2:256).

so, based on the above verses and many other proofs both from the Quran and from the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), it is evident that islam does not preach violence.

ironically enough, if you watch the news and see what's going on, you'll see that people (including the us and israel) have no problem in killing civilians, women, children, and so on. there basically is nothing "off limits" to anyone in war these days. however, islam was the first to put rules in war and to enforce them - during the time of the Prophet, when battles had to be fought, he told the people, "do not kill women, children, old men. do not cut trees" -- mind you, these are rules that were given to the companions of the Prophet right before entering a battle.

if you're wondering, based on all what i said, why there are muslim terrorists, i'll refer you to an american movie that came out not too long ago called syriana. i think this movie really depicts the way things are -- in my personal opinion, these people who grow up to become terrorists grow up in a condition of complete poverty, and/or they lose family members and friends in front of their eyes, death is a really common site for them. so when they grow up, they have nothing to live for... that, combined with miseducation, leads them to do these kinds of things.

as to a modified version of your question, as to how we can stop those extremists from terroristic activities, then there are two ways in my opinion - first is education (on the part of muslim scholars), and second is to stop the war and fighting in those areas so that people there can grow up having normal lives and dreams like the more fortunate ones of us have. these two things combined would ultimately stop modern day terrorism.

so yeah... that's my opinion based on what i know and practice of islam. in summary, i encourage you to not generalize.

ps - to answer one of the posts about "terroristic verses in the quran" - i want to point out the following:

1. you cannot simply pull a verse out of context and say "this is what the book says" -- anyone can open any book, pick a few words they want and say, "see, the book says be terrorists and kill people." - in order to understand what the verse is saying, you have to understand the context of which the verse is revealed in and what its talking about, not a plain english translation.
2. in order to truly understand the quran, you have to understand the arabic language. there are many words in arabic that don't have a one word equivalent in english, and people just do their bests.
3. if you want an explanation of these verses and others and islam's real view on terrorism, i advise you to read a book called "Islam and Terrorism : Myth vs. Reality" by Mauri' Saalakhan (isbn # 0977640000). i've added the link the sources.

According to a recent US State Department report, Patterns of Global Terrorism, 272 terrorist events occurred in Europe, 92 in Latin America and 45 in the Middle East. Sixty-two anti-US attacks occurred in Latin America last year, 21 in Europe and 6 in the Middle East.

These numbers represent the terrorist trend and not an anomaly, whereby the majority of perpetrators are not linked to the Middle East or Islam. The Red Army Faction in Germany, the Basque Separatists in Spain, the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, the Shining Path in Peru and the National Liberation Army in Columbia are not viewed with the same horror as terrorist groups of Muslim background.

There is no moral justification for terrorism regardless of the ethnic or religious background of the perpetrator or the victim, but the factual basis of terrorism has been either hidden or twisted in the public's perception of this policy problem, especially in congressional hearings on terrorism. The countries with the worst terrorist records in the world are not in the Middle East either. They are not even Muslim countries outside the Middle East. They are Columbia and Germany, havens for drug lords and neo-Nazis.

The perception in the Middle East is that US policy does not serve the peoples' interests; it protects Israel, while it slaps sanctions on and takes military actions against countries which disobey its policy, resulting in suffering, starvation and even slaughter, all in the name of teaching the tyrants a lesson. The priorities in the Middle East for the US are not human rights and democracy, but rather oil and Israeli superiority. Consequently, anti-American sentiment increases.

This mood of the general public is then characterized as "Islamic fundamentalism", even though the resentment is not rooted in religion. When it turns violent, it is termed "radical Islamic fundamentalism" or "Islamic terrorism." The various "terrorism experts" promote linkage to the Middle East before any other possibility every time terrorism is speculated. They exploit the human suffering of the victims, their families, and the fears of the American public.

Indeed, extremists of Muslim backgrounds are violating the norms of Islamic justice and should be held accountable for their criminal behavior.

First off not all Muslims are Terrorist. Second you can not stop Terrorist no matter what. Your next door neighbor could be a terrorist and you would never know until something happen. They you would be the person on the news saying "He was such a good Neighbor I would have never thought he was involved in Terrorist actives". Remember Timothy Mcvay? He wasn't a Muslim, but he did like to blow shi* up. You can not wage a war on terror because you can not win, anyone can be a terrorist. We can go 20 years without being attacked again but if we have another 9/11 21 one years from now did we win the war on terror. I think not. Remember the "War on Drugs" when are we going to win that one? I could get drug in America today if I want so why are waging a war on something that can not be won. Answer... There is money to be made from Drugs and Terror.

First and foremost you lumped all Muslims together as terrorists, they are not.But I don't think that was your intention.I don't know how to stop militants of any persuasions in a peaceful manner.Their fanatic beliefs are so deeply entrenched. They are taught to believe there is far more value in death than in life. Its hard to try to talk someone out of martyrdom if that is the only glory they will ever achieve in this life.
If I had a viable ,workable answer to your question I would be in Washington trying to get backers for it.But I just don't know a peaceful solution to your question.

I've served and I've seen. First hand. Unfortunately, there are no quick and easy solutions. Violence has been here for a long time and shall continue long after we're gone. Reaching out, in most cases, will only beget you a stub.

Not only are they Muslim BUT they are from Pakinstan a friendly country to the UK & USA whats up with that? Their goverment turned them in or helped us get them!
I believe that the goverments have to work together BUT us common/normal folks have to connect some how. Us Mothers have to get togather and stop our sons and daughters from killing each other. The kids have to play together to see just how alike they are. before they grow up and kill each other.

Not by invading their countries, and not by occupying their countries, and not by supplying huge quantities of weapons to Israel while Israel is in the middle of a war against an Arab nation. How do we reach out?I think it's too late, but if we knock off those other activities we won't be continuing to make a bad situation worse.

Johnboy, the first answerer, says that Muslims impose their religion on others. Is this really true? I hadn't heard of this. Do they have a large missionary network? Do they proselytize on street corners or door-to-door handing out Koran's? I wonder just how much of an evangelical type religion Islam is.

If you are truthfully looking to stop terrorist activities, you are looking in the wrong direction. You need to look at Israel and our own government.
