I started my new job in a lawyer's office recently after my college graduation. I have some office clothes but i am looking to build up my wardrobe.

What are your suggestions of items i should buy that i could mix and match. I would rather buy seperate pieces than an outfit, because you have more options that way.

Thanks in advance!

You are on the right track with the separates idea. There are many places to buy suit separates, jackets, skirts, pants, blazers that you can match in color and material, then wear together as you want. Suits are the best bet since it is a lawyer's office.
You don't have to go conservative either. There are plenty of trendy styles that are still business. And you don't have to spend a ton of money either. While Neiman Marcus has some beautiful stuff, we can't all afford it. Try Macy's, JcPenney, Ann Taylor, Brooks Brothers, whatever you have locally. I would suggest you don't buy on line. You want a tailored professional look, anything you buy on line you didn't try on. You don't know how it fits until it comes in the mail.
Also look at nice button up blouses, sweaters, and dressy tops. This is a fine line though. You don't want casual, you don't want evening or club wear either. When in doubt, leave on the rack.

main pieces that every girl needs in the workforce are the black skirt, jacket, pants and then you can introducre color with the shirts. can be mixed and maxed as well.

you can also go to upscale consignment places that sell designer only clothes for less than 1/2 the price. i just got a brand new coach bag for $9. still had the tags!

you could also go to www.freecycle.org and enter the area you live in. it's where if you dont want anything anymore you put it up and people who want it come and take it from you. or if your in particular need of something you post a want it. a friend of mine recently was looking for maternity work clothes. she put up a want ad with her size and got tons of amazing maternity clothes for free! all in her size. check it out.
there are people who give away furniture, cars, simple things such as dishes. it's to help recycling out....
good luck!

Don't always go with everything the same color. for example get a pair of tan dress pants and a blue shirt and for the jacket bet it blue also. a nd if you have black shoes.... no need to worry black goes with everything.
other tips: wearing things with stripes going across makes you look bigger that you really are. and things with stripes gong down makes you look smaller than u are so unless you wasn't to look bigger or smaller stay away from the stripes (this only goes for shirts) Don't always go with the button shirts your a lawyer not a grandpa. and remember this black will make you look slim. white will make you look dark/tan. well you can take this advice or not but i promise you, you will be one hot lawyer if you do. ( my brother i a lawyer and i gave him the same advice) God luck and don't forget theses really help full tips

Buy lots of shirts cause I also worked in an office. I spent about $500.00 and bought all kinds of things to mix/match and then I bought lots of heels. It's mainly if you know how to mix/match and do it woth style and accessories. Goodluck but I really don't think you'll need it!

pin stipe pants and jacket are good together or apart
cordoroy jackets always look really cute but professional with plain black office pants
when using cropped jackets and black pants, layer a colorful shirt underneath the jacket to look colorful and try a bead necklace to accesorize
i hope this helps, try tj max for office pants they have a few aisles of office wear at pretty cheap prices...good luck!

Invest in a nice, well tailored three piece suit (jacket, pants, skirt) in a neutral color. Then you can mix and match with the pieces you already have, accesorize, and generally have fun with the how you wear each piece.

First of all, GRAD, we call them LAW OFFICES. lol...but invest in accesories. Sacarves dress up a corporate look. Gap has reallt cute cardigans for around $25. The look for skirts now is about knee high and flowy. These skirts go great with fitted *not TIGHT) tanks and sweaters. For a look for less try:
