I thought analyse that was funny but turned it off because of the language. It didn't add to the film so why do it?

I hear you - some people are excited about "Clerks 2" being out. I saw the first "Clerks" when it came out years ago, and that was my exact opion - it was not nearly as funny as it could have been because of the tremendous amount of foul language. And I use the "F" word once and a while!

Don't watch Hostel then - that was just full of gratuitous swearing. It seems Hollywood is getting pretty foul mouthed nowadays.
Personally I swear much in my personal life and consider there is no need for it in most situations in films. Arguments, shocking scenes and so on are fine but "Good f*cking morning" is not. It's as if all films are trying to beat South Park nowadays (although the South Park film does point out that it is in some ways perverse that violence is more acceptable than bad language).

I think some genres are cleaner than others - animation, sci-fi, fantasy, film noir, musicals and black comedies are usually less foul-mouthed. Also the swearing is a recent phenomenon - there are thousands of excellen classics with no swearing at all.

It's due to the nature of who they're trying to reach with the movie. Their target audience so to speak. Scarface is clearly a classic film. They say the F word more times in that movie than other other movie I can think of. They're portrayed sniffing crack cocaine and killing in a very graphic manner. It simply has to do with who they're trying to reach with the film. Obviously that films target audience was a bit more heathenous, thusforth the swearing. Similar to how many a rap group and heathenous organization often refer to scarface in their songs and endeavours. It reached who they wanted it to reach. Thugs and Gangsters, if not simply "wannabe's" of that genre.
