It's so odd to me that parents would need an artificial guidance factor to monitor their kid's tv watching. It totally baffles me. I suppose because I wonder, "Why aren't you in there with your kids when they are watching tv?"

I suppose my argument as a parent is......spend time with your kids. Even when they are watching tv. Talk about what you are watching. Especially in the early years when their values and opinions are forming. When something comes on that you don't value.......explain, we aren't going to watch this because it has a few things that are inappropriate. Of course at 4 years old they used to ask me what that big word meant. I told them that people would be saying things or doing things that might not make them feel comfortable to watch. And that watching tv was supposed to be fun and relaxing and sometimes you learn things along the way. But some shows forget to do that.......and so we don't always watch everything.

Well years later......I still have my 13 year old standing up and walking to the tv and turning it off and saying.......well that's definitely something we shouldn't watch. And that's that. Oh sure, I can't always be there. But when you have your 11 year old calling you while she's spending the night to ask if it is ok if she watches "blah blah blah" show........well I know that she has formed values that allow her to question the validity of some of these shows. And truthfully.....if my kids do see shows that are inappropriate.........they come and say, "wow, I just couldn't believe they would have blah blah blah and blah blah blah right there on the tv!" I trust my kids judgement. I know how they've been raised......and I know what values they hold dear. Never would I have need for a V chip.

Use it. Trust the kids but little fingers can punch in the wrong numbers on the remote and tune into something that is beyond their years.

you can mix it up and tell the kid not to watch inappropriate stuff, but just in case he's just flipping through the channels, you should use the v chip. because even if you trust the kid, he could just be flipping through the channels, but still see something inappropriate

They just say its the TV programs that are bad, if its so bad, use the damn V-ship, which parents don't use...that tells you parents don't use it, and doesn't trust their kids (most of them) while they are saying its the programs fault...

I just pay attention to what he watches, and if it's not appropriate, I change the channel or turn it off.
