My great-grandfather lived for 105 years. He was born in the 1886 and his life's path took him through years of technical inovation. He came to Texas from Louisanna in the early 1900's to work in the growing South East Texas Oil fields. He made this journey with his wife in a covered wagon which was the normal mode of transporation at the time. Before he passed away in 1991 my uncle 'interviewed' him with a video camera.
One of the questions he was asked is the very question you pose. His quick response... refrigeration. He then went on to explain that prior to man's ability to make things cold so many of things we take for granted wouldn't be possible. Meat... had to be freshly killed or salted or smoked. There was no such thing as iced drinks. Medications were impossible to create and/or store. Homes had no air conditioning. Milk had to be fresh from the cow. Food spoiled so fast that keeping supplies over the winter, especially in warmer climates, was impossible.
So many of man's abilities today are due to the fact that we can create cool temperatures. Computers and electronics would never survive.
So.. there you go... an answer to your question from a wise old gentleman forwarded relayed with great respect by his loving great-grandson.
Hope this helps!

2 For Thought, But There Are Several More.
Dr. Percy Spencer's, invention of the Microwave Oven in 1946.
The Flushing Toilet was invented by Sir John Harrington in 1596. But even in 1921, only 1% of homes in the US had indoor plumbing.

Electricity! No, wait Electricity is not an invention; it's a natural force that was "discovered."
But what I mean is electical service, the harnessing of electricity, which is the fountain from which all cool electronic doo dads flow.
I couldn't begin to answer what the best invention would be without narrowing the question a bit.
Best invention of the last fifty years? Teflon.
Best (and worst) invention of last one hundred years? Gasoline (OTTO) engine.
Neatest invention? Velcro.
Wow! I'm pretty boring.

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is wine. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

Cooling systems. Yeah, sounds lame but without them computer technology coudln't develop, food science would be standing still and we'd be dying of foodborne illness left and right, medical science wouldn't be able to perform some of the amazing things it does. If you look at cooling technology carefully, you'll find that it's had a hand in almost every major advance ever made in modern times.

First...some idiot above me wrote that since we invented the light bulb we now have electricity. HAH. What a retard!!!
Anyway...for overall inventions it would be the wheel. For recent inventions, I would say the transistor which allowed for electronics as we know them and computers.
