My friend has recently been given a ring for his Birthday and he has chosen to wear it on his wedding finger. I said it gave out the wrong signals but he reckons it is old fashioned to think that it is just for your engagement or wedding ring.

I still think its a bit odd, what do you think?

It will tell women that he is married - even if he does not believe in the idea most people do in fact recognise that a ring on the wedding finger usually means someone who is married and no self-respecting woman would go near him. It's also considered bad luck to wear a ring on your wedding finger when not your actual wedding ring.

I wear a traditional wedding ring on my wedding finger, I am not married and have no intention of ever getting remarried. I bought the ring. I think it is more odd for a married man to not wear a ring, although If someone had given me this ring, I would be concerned about the message I would be sending that person. As long as they both understand what stage the relationship is in, I don't see a problem.

its not wrong but slightly pointless
why doesnt he just wear it on the same finger opposite hand? Im assuming he WANTS to get married some day? Well as a woman I conciously look at a guys hand before I chat him up and if I see a ring I know to avoid him - maybe you should tell your friend that? Of course its not big deal what ring he wears the finger on but people are going to see it and think twice

Also if he IS dating a girl, she might think someone gave it to him and hes wearing it as a symbol. i.e. "even though I'm with you my heart belongs to someone else"

It is widely recognized as a symbol of partnership. Tell him if he wears it he will definately have trouble getting women. Unless he only wants the cheap slutty kind. Suggest the next finger over. the only times I ever wore a ring on that finger w/out being married was to keep from getting hit on when out with my friends and not looking for love.

Well u can look at it this way, he can use it to fend off unwanted women and 2ndly its not like he is married, its the same as women we could wear a big flashy ring on our finger does that mean we're married no, i say he's right let him wear the ring

well whats is odd these days? There are no rules and wearing a ring on your 'wedding' finger if your not married is suppost to be bad luck - its all an old wifes tail and needs to be ignored!!!!!
On another note maybe he dosn't feel in a great place to want to attract people and this keeps him safe from been approached in his mind and psycholgically keeps him from been unavailable

It just so happens that this happened to someone very dear to me. Well not in a circus accident. But he lost his fingers. He never wore another wedding ring...but since he was dragging 6 kids around...it didnt matter.

It's certainly not wrong, he can wear whatever he wants. But it sounds like maybe he doesn't really want to meet any women to date -- because it's certainly true that most women would think it is a wedding ring and he doesn't seem to care. Maybe he just doesn't want to meet women right now, for whatever reason, whether he realizes it or not.
