One would assume that it is, since the movie is based and written by the same guy?

The play is just as "child-appropriate" as the movie... the content is the same... I think most teens (15+) could handle it and understand it...
As far as which is better - I saw the play 3 years ago and it was wonderful... saw the movie and was a little let down... I don't know why but I think the movie was a little more watered down and "heterosexual" where the play just seemed a little more "pro-gay"... even though the scenes were pound for pound the same...
The play IS ABOUT AIDS... for some reason, people expect it to beat around the bush and tell a different story...
The only thing is - AIDS and HIV has changed alot since Rent was written - your teens might need some newer information than what the play depicts... for instance, people are not dying so quickly now but the virus is still a huge health hazard.
the meds have come along way...
Hope that helps...

They are very similar with a few exceptions. The themes and songs are the same. It is okay for a teen if you think the movie is okay for a teen. It is a little campy but not bad.
The play is longer, it has a couple more songs and like three more reprises.
There is no talking, all communication is through singing
The set is pretty minimal, you aren't going to see the same kind of scenery as in the movie.

lease is an excellent instruct...your intense college rocks for doing it! by using fact you pronounced you like a small section, right that's a breakdown of the female ensemble individuals (i'm assuming you're a woman). all of them have a minimum of a few strains. Bag woman/Seasons of affection Soloist: that's an outstanding section - small yet considerable. you've got in certainty the main severe solo interior the instruct, so it rather is nice to have a useful voice. Mark's mom: that's a relaxing function. once you're good at being humorous/stressful, you will do rather properly in this section. you may additionally get a small solo in l. a. Vie Boheme. Alexi Darling: See above, yet without the l. a. Vie Boheme solo. that's it. right here is the male ensemble characters, in order that which you recognize and if your college switches genders for such small aspects (which they could): Squeegee guy/Waiter/Steve: This guy is mind-blowing. that's a small section, yet you may get 3 solos - 2 very short yet comedic, and one longer unhappy one. he's my well-known :) Gordon/the guy/Mr. gray: that's an outstanding section in case you desire to be severe - you get to play an AIDS affected person and a drug broking, with a pair of solos. that's an outstanding function. Paul: that's a reasonably small section, not something rather specific, yet a pair of strains. Christmas Caroler/Seasons of affection Soloist: you may get 2 solos - not super ones, yet they're memorable. each and every of the small aspects in lease are rather super, so i think of you would be pleased with regardless of you get. desire I helped!

The aids stuff is the whole point is about people living below poverty level with uncurable diseases and still making it throught it all together good and bad. I am assuming yes all that would still be in the play. If not then perhaps they will all have chicken pox instead. LOL
