I have had absolutely ZERO experience designing websites. I have had an amazing idea for a website and would prefer to build it myself. Am I being unrealistic as it would be better for me to have it up and running as soon as possible? Should I get an experienced web designer to help me? How easy is web design? Where should I start?
I know it should be one question at a time but you can pick and choose which one you answer.

Depending upon what you want - static or interactive database stuff, you need a range of skills.
First off design skills - photoshop / illustrator or equivalent software and then for backend stuff if you need that database and coding skills - php/sql/asp - take your pick with whatever you're comfotable with. There is a range of open source stuff you can get for free - Gimp and Inkscape are excellent.
I've been a web designer for years, and I've not really known anyone comfortable doing the whole thing on their own - I'm sure there are designers/coders but in my experience they're completely different people.
Dreamweaver is (an albeit hard to edit code) fairly good web editor; get a demo from macromedia.com.
The software isn't cheap - if you have a great idea I agree with previous answer - get the professionals in to do it.

Web Designing depends on creativity of a person. To design interactive website you also need to buy a few softwares which will cost you more than getting a professional web developer. The coding part is serious stuff.

You do not need to know HTML, Programming, etc.

If you need it fast, get a web designer to do it, then learn web design yourself. Start by doing a course for beginners and work through HTML for Dummies and CSS for Dummies for starters.

u can have the idea but u gotta make it happen and thats where web programming comes into play. u cant make things dynamic unless u know how to program.
