Say I had a friend that believes his phone is being tapped for certain reasons...well if he called me from his phone, would my phone number be traced? How would I know? Would I get in trouble for even just talking or texting him?

and it would only be if I just talked to him right, because I don't want my other friends in trouble!

ok this might sound REALLY paranoid...but the last time I talked to him I texted him that I had gotten pulled over by a cop for speeding. Now his phone has been off for 3 weeks! He hasn't paid his bill (I know) so his phone is cut off or he cut it off. He tried calling me from someone elses phone that same day after I texted him but I missed his call, and haven't heard from him since. Did I get him in trouble, especially texting him? Is that what they do if they don't want to be traced is to cut off their phone? I really apologize but I want to get a full understanding of things before I put myself in any danger!

If you are that worried about it, then might I suggest you get some different friends or not take calls from them. They don't have to trace calls anymore, we live in a high tech world now. Cell phones transmit over the airways, and anyone with the right equipment can listen to your conversations. All they need do is sit close to you down the road within a mile or so, and beam in on your calls. Text messages is even worse, they can copy them to the Internet and have a paper trail of your conversations. Any type of cordless phone is easy to tap, because it sends signals over the airways too. It don't matter who calls who, the conversation can be listened to by cops or anybody else that has cheap equipment that you can buy on the Internet. It works like a scanner, when they pick up a strong signal, they can lock onto it, and your as- is toast. Best thing to do is avoid telephones all together, and even if you don't want someone outside your house to listen to your conversation inside the house, turn on the stereo loud and stand close to each other. This way you can talk and they can't hear a thing but your music. Be careful!

Not to long ago the phones were being tapped. It was for "government"reasons. One of the reasons was to watch out for terristic threats.I'm not sure what you are saying but i also know that cellular phones can be tapped esier than others. But who knows. If the government wants to here anyone at any certain time then im quiet sure they could trace it.As far as drug issuse go,i wouldn't worry. They are looking for terorrists.Yeah yeah i know my spelling is horrible, and yeah i know that i can fix it.Will i?No.If it can be read i aint stressin over it:)

Two words: Satellite Imagery
I think cellphone tracing is the least of your concerns.
Next time you are on the phone with him, look out the window,
watch for the helicopter, you are in danger!

Let's assume your friend's phone is being tapped.
The government knows exactly who calls your friend, who your friend calls, where they are located, and the names.
You could get in trouble, if your friend is a criminal, being harbored from the police, and you didn't turn him in. If your friend is a terrorist, you could also face charges as a terrorist, guilt by association.
Or, your friend is totally messing with you, and you are so gullible you came to Yahoo Answers to ask this question!

i don't know about being tapped, but I do know that the police can locate a cell phone while you have it on.
They can even send a signal to your phone so that you can't turn it off and they can continue to track your location. I believe that taking out the battery entirely will stop the tracking ability.

If you had any idea how hard it is for cops to get a warrant to listen in on calls you would not be worried.
Your friend would really have to be doing some really bad stuff.

I wouldn't talk to him on the phone at all, and I would block his number. The way you wrote your question leads me to believe that you KNOW for a fact that he did or is still doing something illegal...keep your distance.
