Tanners are usually easily removed by just washing, but since you can't wash the dress do not try to wipe off the tanner yourself or you may cause the stain spread or even take a different color. Take it to a dry-cleaner. They'll do it for you without spreading the stain.

DO NOT SCRUB THE FABRIC!!!!!!!!!! Get luke warm water and a laundry detergent (tide with bleach alternative) and pour a little into the water. Also put a little detergent directly on the stain for a few minutes and let sit. then gently BLOT the affected part of the dress. continue this several times and this will take care of the issue. Soda water will not help with this. You need a detergent. It will not hurt the dress. Just get the the affected area wet and proceed as instructed. Presto!

Take it to the dry cleaners. That's how a prom dress should be cared for anyways. But make sure you tell them about the stain, otherwise they will just clean it and not treat the stain.

What about taking it to a professional cleaners? You didn't mention the type of fabric or if there are special care instructions. The professional cleaners would be able to take that into account and be able to treat the stains properly.

Please take it to a good dry cleaner--they are the experts. Also, it is a good testament to your etiquette that you want to return the dress in the condition you found it. I like people like that.

HOGWASH! idk if they would have it in your town, but its the best thing ever! i spilt strawberry syrupish stuff on a white skirt last summer and i used hogwash, it totally got it out! all you do is wet the material, use a toothbrush and brush the hogwash bar and then brush it onto the fabric, it gets out in about 3 minutes!
