Depending on what college you go to hours might vary.
Usually a student will be classified as a freshman until 30-59 hours are completed. After 30-59 hours are completed, the student will become a sophomore. I have 64 credit hours at my community college and I am still classified as a freshman.

In most schools it is about 30 to 36 credits (based on 16 credit hour semsters, which is fairly standard). But really your class doesn't affect anything besides maybe allowing you to sign up for courses a day or so earlier, so don't be in a rush, College should be fun, not a rat race.

At my school, I think it was 30 credits. If you're on a 4 yr plan, then your second year should be your sophomore year.
