Jeter is so over-rated, it makes me want to puke. He is the second best SS on his team.

Anyway, I would probably take David Wright of the Mets. He is young, he has a good batting eye and great power. He is a good defensive player, as well.

I would consider Mauer, but catchers are so prone to injury. It makes it tough to build a team around them.

Francisco Liriano.
He's still young (22). He's dominate. And since he's a rookie, it wouldn't cost you that much $$. SO I would save $15-20 million by going with Liriano over lets say Pujols. A stud pitcher (or two) is very valuable; just ask the 2001 Diamondbacks.

To Joseph F: I am a Yankee fan; I LOVE JETER! He is however 32 years old.
Liriano already as a rookie and is a STUD! I would want someone who is that dominate, and young, because you can have him for many, many more years than you can have Jeter for. If I were to build a franchise for a year or two... then yes Jeter... for the long run Liriano.

There are only four players that you could consider.
Jeter
A-Rod
Big Papi
Albert Pujols
Jeter has the skills, veteran leadership, lots of experience and can handle the spotlight and pressure put on by New York Yankee fans, the organization and the New York City media.
A-Rod has his best years ahead of him, but everyone has seen how he has cracked under pressure in New York.
Big Papi, on the other hand, loves the spotlight and constantly gets you clutch hits.
Albert Pujols is the youngest but also probably has the most potential to be the best out of all four of them.
Therefore, I'll take Pujols first, Jeter second, Big Papi third, and A-Rod fourth.

Wow...Personally, I do not think there is a better ALL AROUND player than Jeter (defense, baserunning, hitting, baseball smarts)...he can lead off, he is good on defense, and he knows the game inside & out. Plus, he is a good leader, and handles pressure better than just about any other player. Plus, he has done what very few others have done recently...have success under New York's media circus.

BUT, there is no better hitter in baseball than Albert Pujols. He is very tough to strike out, he hits for both power & average, and he is very adequate at 1st base...plus he can play OF and 3rd if need be. He has no holes in his swing, and can hit to all fields. Plus, he's 25.

(*the only other player I would consider, is Joe Mauer. He plays a position that is hard to find good hitting & defense at, at the same time. Plus, he's very young.)

Just one huh??
Well, seeing as how you'd want to start with a young guy first of all... Someone who can be a team leader, and someone who's a great talent hmmmm.....

1. I'd have to go with Joe Mauer - Plays the most important position in baseball and does so every day (unlike a pitcher). Great upside on his talent, and eventually he's athletic enough to be able to transition to 1B if needed.

This MN Twin fan would start with Johan Santana. That guy above had it right. It all starts with pitching. He is fresh, good and young yet. Even if his last two outings haven't been the best.
