i am trying to hook up an ethernet cord to an old '98 Compaq but whenever i open IE, the browser always tries to connect throgh dial-up. how do i change the setting so that IE connects to the network using the ethernet cable and is this even possible? contact me if u can help.

Don't try to use an old computer for Internet usage. Not enough memory and speed.

Open IE, Click on tools -> Internet Options and Connections Tab and remove Dial up configurations and try to re-open IE

In interent explorer go to Tools, Options, then select the Connections Tab. Make sure "Never Dial a Connection" is selected.

first go to tools/internet options/connections inside of your internet explore remove all the connection settings(dialup and vpn. then on Lan setting put to autodetect and next next next and your set.
then close your IE and restart pc. open IE and if it dont work there is a link to autodetect internet settings. click it. after that is should work. (PS make sure you install the network card first)

Go into the network connections and disable or delete the dialup connection and check if the local area network is enabled

connection wizard choose lan instead of dial up
