I noticed at work in some old medical files that patients back in the 60s and 70s were referred to as "middle-aged" if they hit mid-30s plus. I think most people that age now would be horrified at the thought of being "middle-aged" now.

But if you divide life expectancy in half, doesn't that mean you are mid-way through your life at late 30s?

Whenever I have come across 'middle-aged' it has always referred to someone about 45-55 years old.

Different groups of people do see the term middle aged in a different light. The medical profession see middle age as just before the onset of old age decline and related medical problems so a healthy 70 year could be middle age as he is not in old age decline. Nice question well done

Middle-aged should be between 45-50, true. Dropping it to the mid-thirties is terribly depressing!

LOL well being mortified that I'm 28. I think mid-life is 25 as most of my own and my friends parents are all dying now in thier early to mid 50's. So I'd say your mid-way/over the hill by 30

Yea, but we still consider 40 to be "over the hill." People are living longer nowadays anyhow. Most obituaries in my paper are for ppl from 85-90.
