Well i am on varsity swimming but that has nothing to do with exercise to slim down. First of all you can't get rid of fat in one are alone it is just not physically possinble, you can gain muscle in one are alone but you can't lose fat, so if you think ab excercises will reduce the fat that's just a bunch of bull ab exercises will just make your muscles in the ab area look more defined once you lose the fat. The best way for you to shape up is to jog early in the morning before practice 4-6 times a week. If you want to lose the weights really fast then you should build some muscle because the more muscle you have the more calories it takes for you to move thus you lose fat a lot faster so you should probably lift weights 2 or 3 times a week.

I swam varsity all 4 years in HS & 2 years in college and have been coaching since.

Weight doesn't matter. If you are working out hard enough, you will slim down. If you want to concentrate on your abs while swimming, you can do dolphin kick with short fins on your back or side. Do not use a kickboard (it will not let you do the kick correctly). Make sure that you are using your whole body for the kick, not just your legs. If you are doing it correctly, you will definitely feel it in your abs.

You can do Ab workouts all you want but as long as you have a layer chubby fat over your six-pack, there is no use in doing just abs.

Also, it is a common misconception to just work out one area to lose the fat in that area.

If you want to reduce over-all body fat, you need to do muscle strength training with a bit of cardio. When you do strength training, you are actually making micro-tears in your muscle in which it repairs to become bigger. This takes many calories to do and that is why it burns more fat than people that do endurance/distance training. When you walk a mile and run a mile, you burn the same amount of calories; however after you run, your muscles realize that you need stronger muscles to run better next time and spends more calories to tear and repair.

My suggested workout: (note, use your high school/college gym as they have the equipment)

1. A mile run under 8 minutes or try to lower the time below 8 minutes everyday.

2. With or without weights, do leg excercises like squats and calve raises. Many swimmers have the upper body strength to swim but neglect leg training.

Do 3 sets with each set being 50. Give yourself 1 minute rest in between. If you're comfortable with that, you can start holding weights while doing it.

3. As far as upper body work out goes, it depends on what style of swimming you do. Im a free style swimmer so it burns the chest, shoulders, triceps and sometimes biceps. You don't want to build bigger muscles as much as stronger so do more reps over more weight.

chest -
push ups (regular are just hands as wide as your shoulders are and going down until elbows are 90 degrees). 3 sets of 25-25-20 rep.

biceps: dumbell curls - 3 sets of 12-12-10 rep. Or do pull ups.

triceps: I forgot what it was called but there is a machine where you are standing and you pull down a forked-rope with both hands from a bent elbow to straight arms. thats a good 3 set/12-12-10 rep thing to do. Or do dips.

shoulders: take 10 lb weights in each hand and stand up straight. Hold the weights to the side of your body, a resting position. Then lift them outward so that you form a T shape (9 and 3 O clock). Down. Now lift them to 11 and 2 O clock position. Down. Finally, lift them forward in front of you. Down. All that counted as 1 rep. Do 8 , 8, 6.

If you are swimming, I say do each of these excercises twice a week. As it is summer for me now, I do them every other day. The point is, work as many muscle groups at once to burn more calories. That is the only way I know to lose fat but maintaining strength.

Also, watch how you eat. 3 to 4 meals a day without stuffing yourself 100% each time. Stay with healthy foods and I hope this helps.

If you dont know the excercises that I mentioned, look them up online.

Hi. I am a swimmer...not a varsity yet, but we still do dryland. Here are some crunch ideas for you that are out of the norm.

1. Put your legs on a chair and do crunches. Do them normally. then take your left arm and touch it to your right knee, and visa versa. do 15 for each way.

2. Lay flat on your back. Then put your legs straigt up in the air, so you make an L. Then, with your hands behind your head, move your legs straight down till your 2 inches from the floor, then raise it back up again. Then for the obliques, let your legs down slightly off center and raise them again. 10 each way.

3. Lay on your stomach. With your hands underneath you clasp them, so that your forearm is on the carpet (and carpet is the best). raise up onto just your toes and forearms with your hands still grasped. You should be in a plank postion. Do this 3 times for 30 seconds.

Hope I help

first of all don't wear jammers. they just make it look like your self conscious. wear the speedo and don't worry about if you look chubby or not. concentrate on your swimming strength and technique. there is nothing that says that being a little chubby makes you a worse swimmer. 3 years back when i was still in high school, one of my friends was not just chubby but outright overweight, and he was the CIF champ in the 100 and 200 fly his senior year. i don't ever remeber anyone calling him fat after he showed them his skill. most importantly, have fun. you'll automatically tone you abs while swimming.
