I assume that you are talking about mammary tumors in female rats, it is nearly impossible to prevent but some people recommend spaying your rattie before it reaches puberty. I had a sweet rattie die during tumor removal just a month ago. The best bet would be to do as much research as you can and talk to a vet with loads of rat experince. Listed below is a good pet rat site with loads of info, it's not just for Canadians. Good luck

You can't really. Most rats are likely to get them because its in their genes and there isn't much you can do about it. Sorry, the best you can do is check your rats for tumors regularly and take them to the vet as soon as possible if you find something questionable. Most reputable rat breeders try to breed only rats with no family history of tumors so the rats from them are less likely to get tumors, but they are common in pet store and rescued rats.

THE LAST COUPLE ANSWERS ARE CORRECT. THE BEST YOU CAN DO IS CHECK FOR BUMPS, BEFORE THEY GET BIG. USUALLY RATS WILL DIE DURING REMOVAL, SO MAKE SURE YOU ARE AHEAD OF THE GAME. I HAVE BEEN TOLD TO NOT FEED THEM A WHOLE BUNCH OF "HUMAN-FOOD." HOPE THIS HELPS.
