808 is definitely a drum sound. That's what Kelis means. It's nothing sexual or an area code. There was a song a few years ago by Blaque called 808 and the beat of the song was a direct reference to drum sound 808.

Xaemiejiel has waged a bit of a battle. The TR-808 is, or was, a very popular drum machine that may or may not be manufactured anymore. These days, it is mostly heard as a package of drum machine sounds included with keyboards, sequencers, samplers, software, and so on.
Just as in Kelis' song, the "808" is still very often referred to as a noun ("the 808") because many people probably remember using an actual drum machine to get that super-deep bass kick. Plus, if you're making a record with Too Short, chances are he is letting you borrow his 808.
The 909 was the next generation of Roland TR series drum machines...

Well I haven't heard the song, but I would think she is referring to a Roland 808, a drum machine used in a lot of early hip hop. Big Boi namechecks it at the beginning of "The Way You Move" and many others have as well.

808 is a drum machine. Don't listen to people who says its an area code...it is but thats not what singers like Kelis and Beyonce are using it for ...they're using it for the drum definition.
