It's given me a better sense of other cultures and traditions. It helps one to understand that there are beliefs other than what we know in our own society. It's sort of like the movie Pleasantville. Those people were bland and boring until they realized that there was a world beyond what they were taught. They quickly had to learn to overcome prejudices. It effected their whole world. Only then did they get a new outlook on life.

For me, learning about other people's beliefs was an amazing eye opener. I was able to step back and say "although I was raised Christian, there are far more people who disagree with Christianity than are for it. Since their religions have just as much proof as Christianity does (ZERO) it stands to reason that either all religions are wrong and one is right or they all have some element of truth to them."

If only one religion is correct, then some cruel god has placed us all here and our eternal destiny is determined by no more than a guess.

If they all have an element of truth to them and no religion is totally accurate, then, again, we have little ways of knowing what is true and what is falsehood. Also, unless only one person will be saved, there must be multiple paths to the same truth.

To me, being religious is about independence. It's about discovering spirituality on my own. It's a responsibility and an adherence to truth and truth alone.

There are no books with all the answers. There are no men who can guide me down the true path. I must simply walk, think, and become responsible for my own path and I have no clue where I'll end up.

Actually, this is exactly why I became an athiest 50 years ago. The more I learned about religion the more I saw just how phony and self serving it is and how the various dogmas and religions tenants were really nothing more than mind control... a way to keep the masses on their assez... and I didn''t like what I saw.

One thing about being an Athiest is, you tend to learn much more about religion than people who just stick with one belief system so you know they can't all be right and you see religion for all of it's shortcomings and flaws... something the faithful can never do.

I think it's important to learn because religion has a important part in world history.

It also helps you understand other cultures better - something that will help when you work with people of different religions/cultures.

The more religions I have studied the more I have come to understand that they are all illogical and so full of contradictions that they are not worth the paper their holy books are written on.
