It can help control swelling. Also sometimes they have evidence of other diseases, such as venous incompetence which can cause bi pedal oedema, and the stockings can help.

And importantly, often patients with this don't really want to move much, or are unwell, making a DVT and chance of subsequent PE much higher. The cost of these stockings is much less than having an ultrasound scan for DVT, or CTPA for PE if patients complain. Although sometimes patients can complain that the stockings are too tight and causing pain themselves.
